Day Trip(per) To Liverpool

Liverpool, England, is a city not to be dismissed. Most people heading to England for a shopping/eating/drinking trip will think of London or Manchester. But, think outside the box and you could have a really good weekend in the former European Capital of Culture City. Life* has just come back from the city and we were mighty impressed.

The once unattractive city, Liverpool is not what it was, even ten years ago. It has undergone comprehensive redevelopment and now looks like a very modern city with great shops, wine bars and restaurants. And as an added bonus, the city has the fabulous Albert Docks featuring the largest collection of Grade I listed buildings in the country, which is home to many museums, including the story of the city's most famous foursome, The Beatles. The Albert Docks hosts many festivals and attractions and has a number of places to eat and drink and watch the world go by.

And for shopping and eating, there is no better place to be than Liverpool One, a shopping and leisure complex within the heart of the city. Department stores include Debenhams and John Lewis, shops include the usual high street retailers, Allsaints, Pull & Bear, Fred Perry, Hugo Boss, Karen Millen, Kiehl's, Michel Kors, Pretty Green, Reiss and many more. You won't get bored shopping here. There is also an Odeon cinema and many options for food including bistros, Pizza Express, Wagamama, Nando's and TGI Fridays. We ate at The Clubhouse, which is a great wine bar overlooking the Green on the top level of Liverpool One. We were very lucky with the weather and spent a couple of hours in the afternoon having late lunch/early dinner with a few drinks in the fabulous sunshine outside the wine bar. The place was buzzing!

Night life consists of many trendy bars along St Peter's Square and the famous Mathew Street, home to the Beatles with The Cavern and Eric's. The great thing about Liverpool's night life is that you don't have far to walk from one to the other as everything is fairly central.

All in all, Liverpool takes in history, music, shopping, eating and drinking. An all round good time!
