The Smoothie For Glowing Skin
I have a smoothie most mornings every week. But recently I have become quite conscious that they are predominantly fruit based with a little bit of spinach thrown in if I have it. I'm not very good at mixing up what I put in my smoothies so I have been having almond milk (homemade), banana, blueberries, strawberries, chia seeds and a few oats. As you can see, not much by way of vegetables in there but very delicious to drink.
Last time I made green smoothies, the benefits far outweighed the fruit one above, it keeps your bloated tummy under control, controls sugar cravings and adds a glow to your skin. However, again, apart from the spinach element, they were heavily fruit based, banana, kiwi and orange.
I just couldn't get my head around drinking mostly vegetables first thing in the morning. At the beginning, I tried a few variations of a green smoothies and one or two went straight down the sink. Since then, I've stuck to what I know. But I got brave recently and decided to try a new one. The good thing about this one is that the vegetables are spinach (which I know) and carrots (which are a sweet veg), so I was holding out a lot of hope. Here's the recipe:
1/2 cup blueberries
1 tsp turmeric
Thumb size piece of ginger
A bunch of spinach
Blueberries are low in calories and high in nutrients and antioxidants, probably the best possible fruit to add to your smoothie. Avocado, a unique type of fruit, is high in healthy fats, not carbohydrates like most other fruits. Lemons have numerous benefits but in a nutshell they help boost your immune system and cleanse your stomach. Turmeric is getting a lot of attention recently as one (if not thee) most effective nutritional supplement. It has powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is a strong anti-oxidant. Ginger, again a very healthy spice, is famous for helping stomach upset and nausea and is good at fighting the cold and flu. And of course spinach, our leafy green power food. Rich in iron, it helps to restore energy, increase vitality and improve the quality of the blood.
Ok, now that we have covered all the reasons why you should drink this smoothie every day, you want to know how it tastes?! Surprisingly, quite good. I had such reservations in trying another vegetable smoothie and I'm so pleased that this one went down well. There are no foul tasting foods in here. The avocado adds a creaminess and the spice from the ginger and turmeric gives it a warming kick.
