Beautyblender Sponge - Is It Worth The Hype?

Has anyone not heard of the Beautyblender by now? I'm sure I'm preaching to the converted here but on the off chance that some of you don't know it or some of you have been deliberating over trying it, I will let you know just how fantastic it is. Those Beautyblender converts can go and make a cup of tea now, you'll already know this!

I spent a longtime deciding on whether to bother trying this product. I already have one of those flat foundation brushes, a stippling brush, a sculpting brush and my good old finger tips, all of which I alternate to apply my foundation depending on my mood or the condition of my skin that day. Since I bought the Beautyblender, I have only used this to apply my foundation. It is the most perfect applicator and never fails, no matter what condition my skin is in. If my skin is feeling a bit dry or if it is in perfect condition that morning, the Beautyblender will give you the perfect finish regardless. I know it might seem a bit strange to say that as I'm a big believer of prepping the skin before makeup but sometimes even after cleansing, serum and moisturising in the morning, if my skin is dry or sensitive it can still affect how my makeup goes on. But the Beautyblender really gets the foundation to settle into all the right places and not settle into the wrong places (i.e. fine lines, wrinkles or dry patches).

To use it, you need to dampen it, otherwise the sponge will soak up some of the foundation. So what I have been doing is adding a little bit of mild baby shampoo (what I use to clean my brushes with) and wash the sponge (which cleans it from its previous use) and this then dampens it ready for use. Make sure you gently squeeze out all the excess water, it helps to squeeze it in a towel afterwards ensuring it is damp and not wet. When applying your foundation, it is best to bounce the sponge around your face rather than rubbing it across your skin. I particularly love the Beautyblender for applying my under eye concealer. Apart from using my finger to blend concealer in, I have never been able to find a brush I like to apply it. The pointed end of the Beautyblender is absolutely perfect for this job. And I mean perfect! When I use my fingers, I seem to be blending for ages to get it right but with this sponge 4 or 5 pats and its blended in perfectly.

There is only one downside I have found. When you are cleaning it, you don't feel like you are getting it totally clean. With brushes, you can see the water runs clear and the brushes returns to their original colour. You can actually see the water running clear with the sponge but you still see traces of foundation on the sponge afterwards. This isn't something that bothers me but it does make me feel that I will have to replace it more often. At £16 I would like it to last as long as my brushes that cost that much (none of which I have had to replace before 5 years!). And it is quite a delicate sponge so be careful with fingernails etc.

All in all, this is a fantastic sponge to apply foundation and concealer. Of course, it can be used for any liquid/cream product but I like to keep it for foundation/concealer and blending after blusher and highlighter. Well worth the money as long as you don't have to replace it too often.
