Friday Music Pick - Years And Years
Olly Alexander is a very different sort of LGBTQ pop star and he’s been living in the public eye in the UK for much of his life. He started out as a child actor in the West End before moving into TV shows such as Skins and starring in the musical God Help The Girl. Years & Years, the synthpop trio that Alexander leads, released their debut album in 2015 to great critical acclaim and hit the number one spot.
And now they’re back with Palo Santo (“Holy Wood” in Spanish), an expertly crafted pop album and sexuality is at the heart of the songs. “Sanctify”, the first single from the album is unabashed pop nostalgia and was inspired by his experiences with men who identified as straight, and being tasked with leading them down a path of 'gayness'. And the album goes from pop to R'n'B and back again. This is big, bold, honest pop music with ridiculously catchy songs and music that you are going to hear everywhere this summer. Enjoy it for what it is, here's the lead single Sanctify.
