Beauty Tips: How Often Should You Exfoliate?

It’s not so much a question of how often you should exfoliate as it is what you should use to exfoliate.

Firstly, it is important to avoid all those old school scrubs that have rough particles in them or any cloths that are too rough. These do more damage to your skin and can leave your skin feeling red and raw. Although you are trying to remove the dead skin cells, you don’t want to actually look like you have removed the top layer of skin.

Skin cells don’t shed as good as they did when we were younger, so as we get older, we have to give it a helping hand.  A lot of the dead skin cells that we need to get rid off are deeper than on the surface of the skin. So we need a product that can reach these layers and do the job gently.

What you want to look for is an AHA exfoliant, which is lactic or glycolic acid, or a BHA exfoliant, which is salicylic acid. If you’re not sure which to use, AHA’s are water soluble and are favoured by those with normal to dry skin. BHA’s are oil soluble and are generally favoured by those with normal to oily skin.

In terms of frequency when it comes to exfoliating, this can be done as often as you need to or as often as your skin can withstand. Start off doing it once a week and increase the amount of times you do it if you feel it is necessary. I personally exfoliate twice a week and in some cases only once. I don’t feel like I need to do it more than this as I don’t particularly have problem skin. But I know people who are happy to use this product every night. You need to experiment and figure out what works for you.
