Beauty Tips: Enhance Your Skin With An Essence

Layering skincare is something that we are learning is of great benefit to our skin. K-beauty brought this skincare regime to the forefront, with anything from seven to twelve steps to their beauty routine. A bit much if you ask me but I totally buy into it and I have been known to have seven steps on occasion. Not every night, just the nights I include an exfoliate and a mask.

In the West, we are more likely to change our moisturisers to a heavier winter appropriate one, which is not always the best option (it particularly doesn’t always work for me). However, we are catching on, with some people layering different serums to get maximum results from their skincare, not wanting to compromise one ingredient over another, so they incorporate both.

Making time for extra steps in your routine can really payoff. It can be quite therapeutic and the results are more evident than changing your current routine, instead adding to it. So, if you typically cleanse (double cleanse at night), exfoliate, serum and moisturise, then a great place to begin adding an extra step is by investing in an essence.

An essence is a lightweight liquid that is typically applied to your skin directly after cleansing. As they tend to a thin liquid, they absorb into your skin quickly and prepare it for your other products like serum and moisturiser. An essence will contain active ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and they will penetrate deeper into the skin than serums or oils, thus giving you extra hydration.

Essences are becoming increasingly popular and there are many to choose from, depending on your specific need; anti-ageing, pigmentation issues, dull skin, even skin tone etc. One of my favourites is Vichy Mineral 89 Hyaluronic Serum Booster, which I use to top up the hydration from my serum and moisturiser. I have seen real results since I started to use this and have not needed to change any other products.

However, dehydration or extra hydration may not be your only concern, so as a few examples, here are a few others on the market:
