Met Gala 2019 Red Carpet Highlights
With a theme of Camp: Notes on Fashion, this has been one of the more interesting red carpet highlights from the Met Gala. As you can imagine, celebrities went to town with this years theme and their corresponding outfits. It really was a case of who could be the most outrageous. Not sure there could be only one winner but certainly a few stand out performances on the red carpet.
Monday night in New York city came to life and wasn’t for the faint hearted. This years chosen theme was inspired by Susan Sontag’s iconic 1964 essay, Notes on “Camp,” which describes the essence of camp as “love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration.”
Lady Gaga took about fifteen minutes to walk the red carpet, given that she stripped down from a flamboyant pink gown, through two further outfits, until she was left standing in her bra and knickers. Billy Porter was then carried in, adorned on a litter, by six well toned men in gold trousers. Porter’s outfit was also head to toe gold and included a bejewelled catsuit with 10 foot wings and a 24-karat gold headpiece. Very Ancient Egypt!
The Camp: Notes on Fashion theme played right into the hands of people like Bette Midler and Joan Collins, who are camp icon legends and know how to work it. Then we have Jared Leto who turned up with the winning accessory; his own head! In full Gucci ensemble, and of course a nod to the AW18 catwalk, Leto walked the red carpet with his head on his arm, and sometimes outstretched in front of him as he admired himself. I think it’s safe to say this is a man with confidence and self-love.
